About Us

Our Department

Computational Mathematics

The Computational Mathematics Bachelor’s Degree Program has among its core courses:

  • In Mathematics: Discrete mathematics, abstract algebra, linear algebra, mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, and advanced calculus.
  • In Computer Science: Introduction to Programming, Database Systems, Data Structures and Algorithms, Computer Organizations and Operating Systems.

There are close to 50 students currently enrolled in the program, 52% of them are women.

Actuarial Mathematics

The Department also is projecting to offer a Curricular Sequence (minor) in Actuarial Mathematics. Upon approval during the current academic year, starting in August 2008, we should be offering seventeen (17) credits in Actuarial Mathematics, leading students to the basic SOA/CAS certification actuarial exams.

Research

Although not a curricular requirement, most of our junior and senior students participate in undergraduate research projects. One of our two labs is devoted to undergraduate research and is equipped with several PCs, SGI stations, and a multiprocessor SGI Altrix.

Computational Mathematics’ faculty and research students and other projects have been funded recently by US federal programs from NSF, NIH, NSA, and NASA. In particular, the NSA URMAA Project provides support for research and research related activities for Cmputational Mathematics faculty and students. Faculty research is supported or has been supported recently other campus-wide programs such as PREM and ADVANCE-IT as well as by external funding awarded directly to researchers. Undergraduate research students are sponsored by MARC, RISE, AMP and other programs. Local and institutional funding is also available to provide seed support for release time and materials for new research projects.

Our Campus

The University of Puerto Rico at Humacao is one of the eleven campuses of the University of Puerto Rico, a public university system. It is located on the southeastern coast of the island. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in natural sciences, business, and education. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 students, mostly puertorricans whose native language is Spanish, and know English as a second language.

Our Town

Humacao is a coastal town (pop. 60,000) that has as its main economic activities manufacturing (mostly pharmaceuticals) and tourism. A 50 minute trip by car takes you to San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Capital. Cultural activities in Puerto Rico include many music and craft festivals, concerts by main artists from all over the world, and classical music including the Casals Festival for which the UPRH traditionally hosts one of the concerts. The main sports followed by locals are basketball and volleyball, with soccer gaining increasing popularity. Average temperatures range from 80 to 95F (25 to 35C) all year long.
