We will explore how the complex exponential function arises in a natural way from two famous conformal maps of the earth -- the stereographic projection and Mercator's map. Without using any complex analysis, we will be able to establish some of the most basic properties of this important function. A familiarity with Calculus is sufficient background for prospective members of the audience.
